Known as “The Spirit of Exploration” Dunrobin Distilleries becomes the first distillery to serve spirits to skaters on the Rideau Canal.
OTTAWA, ONTARIO: Fans of the Rideau Canal Skateway now have something new to look forward to this winter season. With bars and restaurants closed (or limited to Winter outdoor patio’s), the NCC has taken the lead by allowing spirits to be served on the Rideau Canal Skateway this season. After an extensive RFP process, Dunrobin Distilleries was selected for their locally made premium spirits as well as their creation of a truly unique Ottawa winter cocktail, a soul warming “hot toddy”, they call the “Northern Spike” made from hot maple sap and a shot of Dunrobin’s award-winning Canadian whisky.
On the opening day of the skating season on the Rideau Canal, Dunrobin Distilleries, Ottawa’s premier craft distillery, made history when they became the first distillery to serve premium locally made spirits at this iconic cultural event, that attracts over 1 million people every year.
“We have been overwhelmed by the positive response we have received from skaters who have tried our Northern Spike or line of spirits for the first time” says Mark Watson co-founder “Covid has been challenging for everyone and to see people’s eyes light up when they realize they can now also enjoy an alcoholic drink on the canal, makes us feel even more a part of our community.”
Known as “The Spirit of Exploration” Dunrobin is also helping skaters explore their full line of locally handcrafted spirits with single shot tastings of their popular Earl Grey Gin, Artisanal Vodka and Gin, as well as their recently released Limoncello and Canadian Whisky.
The Dunrobin Cocktail kiosk is operating on the ice, from a customized “Airstream” Caravan, provided by Country Club Caravan. It is located on the Rideau Canal Skateway at the Concord Rest Area between the NAC and the Pretoria Bridge. (Distance markers 1.2km and 1.4km.)
Operating hours are from Mon- Wed + Sun from 11-5pm and Thursday thru Saturday from 11 am to 8pm.
